An “AI PC” is a computer with an NPU — a chip that runs AI features locally instead of in the cloud — and for most people it’s a nice-to-have, not a must-have. The sticker is on every laptop in the store right now, and salespeople are leaning on it hard. Here’s what the label actually means, what the chip actually does for you, and when it’s worth paying for.
What an NPU actually is
NPU stands for neural processing unit. It’s a section of your laptop’s processor built for one job: the repetitive math behind running AI models (what engineers call inference). Your CPU can do that math, and your GPU can do it faster, but the NPU does it at very low power — so AI features can run constantly in the background without draining your battery or making the fans howl.
That’s the whole pitch. An NPU doesn’t make your laptop smarter; it makes always-on AI features cheap enough, in battery terms, to leave running.
NPU performance is measured in TOPS — trillions of operations per second. Bigger is better, but as we’ll see, the number matters less than the marketing suggests.
Decoding the labels: “AI PC” vs. “Copilot+ PC”
Two different stickers, two different meanings:
- “AI PC” is a marketing term with no enforced standard. Almost any laptop with any NPU — or honestly, without one — can wear it.
- “Copilot+ PC” is Microsoft’s certified tier, and it has real requirements: an NPU capable of at least 40 TOPS, plus a minimum of 16GB of RAM. Only Copilot+ machines get Windows features like Recall, Windows Studio Effects (background blur, eye contact), Live Captions with real-time translation, and Cocreator image generation.
If you see “AI PC” without “Copilot+,” check the spec sheet. It may have an older, weaker NPU that qualifies for the vibe but not the features.
The 2026 chip landscape in one minute
As of this writing, the three main laptop chip families all clear the Copilot+ bar comfortably (TOPS figures are the manufacturers’ reported NPU numbers):
- Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite — around 80 TOPS, the current NPU leader. Arm-based, so a small number of niche Windows apps still run through emulation.
- AMD Ryzen AI 400 series — around 60 TOPS, launched in early 2026.
- Intel Core Ultra Series 3 (“Panther Lake”) — around 50 TOPS, launched at CES 2026.
Notice something: the entry bar is 40, and everything current is 50–80. If you’re buying a new mid-range-or-better laptop in 2026, you’re getting a qualifying NPU whether you asked for one or not. The “should I buy an AI PC?” question is quietly answering itself.
What the NPU does for you, concretely
Here’s what actually runs on that chip today:
- Video call effects — background blur, noise suppression, auto-framing, without murdering your battery on a long call. This is the feature most people actually feel.
- Live Captions — real-time subtitles and translation for any audio playing on the machine. Genuinely great for accessibility and foreign-language video.
- Local search and Recall — Windows can index what you’ve seen and search it by meaning. Useful, though Recall’s privacy trade-offs are worth reading up on before you enable it.
- On-device image tools — generative fill, upscaling, and image generation in supported apps.
What it mostly does not do: run the chatbots you actually use. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot’s hard questions still run in the cloud. So should you pay extra for it?
Simple decision rules:
- Buying a new laptop anyway? Don’t overthink it. Current chips qualify by default. Spend your attention (and money) on RAM instead — 16GB minimum, 32GB if you want to play with local models. RAM decides what you can run; our small-models-by-RAM guide shows exactly why.
- Happy with your current laptop? An NPU is not a reason to upgrade. Every important AI tool works in a browser on whatever you own now.
- Tempted by a premium over an identical non-AI model? Skip it unless a specific feature above is a daily-driver for you. The features are nice; none of them is transformative.
Honest caveats
- TOPS numbers are manufacturer-reported peak figures under favorable conditions, and vendors count them in ways that don’t compare cleanly. Treat them as tiers (“clears the bar” vs. “doesn’t”), not a leaderboard.
- Chip specs and Copilot+ requirements are current as of this writing but move fast; check the spec sheet on the actual model you’re buying.
- Software is the lagging half. The NPU in your laptop will likely spend most of its life idle for the first year or two; the bet is that more apps use it over time.
- None of this applies to Macs, which have shipped a Neural Engine since 2020 and just don’t market it as loudly.
The bottom line
The NPU is real, the “AI PC” label is mostly marketing gravity around it, and the honest advice is boring: buy the laptop you’d buy anyway, get plenty of RAM, and let the NPU come along for the ride. The AI features that change your day still mostly live in the cloud and in tools you can run on anything — start with those.
