Today in AI (September 10, 2026): OpenAI Drops Astra, Live Voice, and a Data Agent

OpenAI just stacked three launches that hit everyday ChatGPT users, builders, and small teams in the same 24 hours: a new frontier model, natural phone-ready voice in the API, and a Data agent that turns company numbers into dashboards you can ask for in plain English.

1. GPT-6 Astra starts rolling out to ChatGPT and the API

OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra, its newest flagship model. The company pitches Astra as state of the art on computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, science, and professional work. In plain terms: it is built to drive software on your behalf, write and debug code, and produce usable docs, spreadsheets, and slides, not just chat answers.

On computer use, OpenAI says Astra can handle tedious work like filling online forms, updating CRM records, organizing calendars, researching online, and drafting in email or docs. On coding, it reports strong agentic results in its published comparisons (including Terminal-Bench 4.0 and DeepSWE v1.1). Codex also gets an experimental way to keep searchable notes across long context windows so long sessions lose fewer details.

Availability matters for normal users. OpenAI says Astra is rolling out first to a limited set of organizations, then over the coming days to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, plus the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock. Usage is included in existing subscription allowances, with optional credits for more. Pro, Business, and Enterprise also get GPT-6 Astra Pro. Enterprise admins enable it for the workspace; access is off by default at launch. In the API the model id is gpt-6-astra. OpenAI lists Standard API pricing at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, with separate cache rates and a Fast mode at 2x Standard price for up to 2x speed.

Astra is also OpenAI’s first model classified at the critical cybersecurity capability level under its Preparedness Framework. The production build restricts advanced offensive tasks; OpenAI says defenders can use it for work like secure code review and patching, with broader defensive access planned through its Daybreak program.

Why it matters: if you pay for ChatGPT or ship on the API, this is the upgrade that changes day-to-day workflows, not a research paper you ignore. Stronger computer use and coding mean more “do the busywork” and less “give me an outline.” Businesses should watch admin defaults and cyber safeguards before flipping it on for everyone.

2. GPT-Live-1 brings full-duplex voice to the API at $0.05/minute

Same day, OpenAI launched GPT-Live-1 in the API. It is the full-duplex voice model first seen in ChatGPT: it can listen and speak at the same time, handle interruptions more smoothly, and keep talking while it delegates deeper reasoning or tool calls to a backend model such as GPT-6 Astra (or another model you choose).

That architecture shift is the practical story. Classic voice stacks chain speech-to-text, a text model, and text-to-speech. Each hop adds lag and brittle turn-taking. Live-1 collapses listening and speaking into one voice layer, then hands hard work to the back end. OpenAI highlights telephony for phone agents, better noise handling, longer-session reliability, and more control over tone and style. It is also expanding voices across accents, dialects, and languages.

Pricing is straightforward for builders: OpenAI says GPT-Live-1 is available in the API at $0.05 per minute for the front-end voice layer. You still pick (and pay for) the backend model and tools that fit the job. Early customer quotes on the announcement page cite fewer tutor interruptions (Speak), simpler codebases (Abridge), and more natural call handling (Yelp).

Why it matters: small businesses that live on the phone (shops, clinics, restaurants, service trades) finally get a cleaner path to agents that sound like a conversation, not a walkie-talkie. If you have been testing call triage or appointment booking, this is the model layer to evaluate against your current STT/TTS stack.

3. A Data agent in ChatGPT Work turns “why did sales slow?” into dashboards

OpenAI also shipped a new Data agent in ChatGPT Work. The pitch is simple: connect approved company data, ask business questions in plain language, investigate what changed, and build interactive dashboards you can share, without writing SQL or learning a new BI tool from scratch.

Supported sources in the launch post include Amazon Redshift, Datadog, Google BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, MongoDB, Snowflake, and more, plus files from Google Drive and SharePoint. It can lean on existing business definitions and semantic layers. On the output side, OpenAI says it can build and work with dashboards in tools teams already use, including Power BI, Tableau, Sigma, and ThoughtSpot. Admins choose which connections and roles are allowed; queries respect the connected account’s existing permissions.

Getting started is plugin-shaped: find Data in the ChatGPT Work Plugins directory, install or have an admin enable it, connect sources, then talk to @Data.

Why it matters: most small and mid-size teams do not have spare analysts on tap. A governed “ask the warehouse” agent inside ChatGPT Work is the difference between waiting for a weekly report and checking a number before a customer call. The catch is governance. Bad permissions still make bad answers, so treat admin setup as the real launch, not the demo prompt.

The quick take

Thursday’s theme is not a vague “AI gets smarter.” It is three concrete product surfaces: a model that can drive computers and ship work artifacts, a voice layer cheap enough to put on phone lines, and a data agent aimed at people who have questions but not a BI queue. If you only do one thing this week, try Astra on a real multi-step task you already hate doing by hand. If your business runs on calls, put Live-1 on a shortlist next to your current voice stack.
