The Best Small AI Models for 8GB and 16GB Laptops

The app matters less than the model, and the model matters less than matching it to your RAM. Here are our picks for 8GB and 16GB laptops — the machines most people actually own — and the one rule that prevents every beginner mistake.

The rule first: a model needs to fit in memory with room left for your system. As a rough guide, a model’s download size plus 2–3GB should stay under your total RAM. Oversize it and you don’t get a slightly slower chatbot — you get a machine grinding at one word every few seconds. Every disappointment we hear about local AI traces back to this.

New here? Start with the setup guide, and pick an app in Ollama vs. LM Studio. Now, the picks.

The five families that matter

In 2026 the open-model world has consolidated around five names, all free to download, all shipped in multiple sizes: Llama (Meta), Qwen (Alibaba), Gemma (Google), Mistral, and DeepSeek. You don’t need to track releases — you need one good default per machine size.

8GB of RAM: the 3–4B class

This is phone-class AI running on your laptop, and it’s better than it has any right to be.

  • Our pick: a ~4B Gemma or Qwen. Both are the standouts of the tiny class — coherent, fast on CPU, fine at summarizing, rewriting, and everyday questions.
  • Also good: Llama 3.2 3B — the safe, well-supported default that everything is tested against.

What to expect: quick responses, solid everyday competence, and noticeable limits on long documents and complex reasoning. Close other heavy apps — the browser is your real competitor for RAM.

16GB of RAM: the 7–8B sweet spot

This is where local AI stops feeling like a demo. The 8B class is the best capability-per-gigabyte deal in AI.

  • Our pick: an 8B Llama or Qwen. Qwen’s 7–8B models punch hardest on reasoning and multilingual work; Llama 8B is the ecosystem’s lingua franca with the broadest tool support.
  • Also good: Mistral 7B — famously efficient, a favorite for speed on modest CPUs; and DeepSeek’s small distills if you want visible chain-of-thought reasoning on a budget.

What to expect: competitive with the cloud chatbots of 2023–24 for most daily tasks. Drafting, coding help, summarization, brainstorming — genuinely useful, all offline.

Beyond 16GB, and the quantization footnote

At 32GB the 12–14B class opens up (Gemma and Qwen both shine there), and enthusiast machines run 27–70B models that flirt with frontier-grade output — we put a 17GB Qwen on a laptop and wrote up the results.

One term you’ll see everywhere: quantization — compressing a model to use less memory at a small quality cost. The versions Ollama and LM Studio hand you by default (usually labeled Q4) are already the sensible compromise. Don’t overthink it: default quantization, size matched to RAM, one of the five families. That’s the whole game.
