What Is Grok? xAI’s Chatbot, Explained for Normal People

Grok is the AI chatbot from xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company — and its defining trick is that it’s wired directly into X (formerly Twitter), so it can answer questions about what’s happening right now. If ChatGPT is the general-purpose assistant, Grok is the one with its ear permanently to the ground. Here’s what it actually is, where to find it, what it costs, and whether it’s worth your time.

The basics

Grok launched in late 2023 as X’s built-in chatbot and has grown into a full product family: a chat assistant, an image and video generator (Grok Imagine), a voice mode, and a developer API. The current flagship model as of this writing is Grok 4.6, released in August 2026.

You can use Grok in four places:

• Inside X — the Grok button in the app, plus tagging @grok under posts to ask questions in public
• grok.com — a standalone chat site, no X scrolling required
• The Grok mobile app — iOS and Android
• The API — for developers building on xAI’s models

What makes it different

Real-time X data. Most chatbots know the web via search. Grok additionally sees the live firehose of X posts. Ask “why is this person trending?” or “what’s the reaction to today’s announcement?” and it can pull from conversations happening this minute. That’s genuinely useful for news, sports, and anything moving fast — and it’s the main reason to reach for Grok over alternatives.

Grok Imagine. Image and short-video generation, available to free and paid users in the apps and on grok.com. The video generation in particular is one of the more accessible ways for a normal person to try AI video today.

Voice mode. Spoken back-and-forth conversation in the mobile apps, similar to ChatGPT’s voice feature.

Personality. Grok was pitched from day one as the “rebellious” chatbot — less filtered, more willing to joke. In practice it’s tamer than the marketing, but it does have a looser default tone than its rivals.

What it costs

Reported as of this writing — xAI changes plans often, so confirm on their site:

• Free: usable on X, grok.com, and the apps with daily usage limits.
• SuperGrok (about $30/month): higher limits, the newest models, and power features like DeepSearch.
• SuperGrok Heavy (about $300/month): the maxed-out tier with xAI’s heaviest models. Almost nobody needs this.

X’s own premium subscriptions also bundle Grok access, which muddies the picture — if you already pay for X Premium, check what you’re getting before buying SuperGrok separately.

Grok vs. Grok Bot: one clarification

Same underlying AI, very different way of using it. Honest caveats

• Real-time doesn’t mean reliable. Grok’s superpower is reading X, and X is full of confident nonsense. It can repeat trending misinformation with the same fluency as facts. Treat breaking-news answers as leads to verify, not verdicts.
• The “less filtered” pitch cuts both ways. Grok has had public incidents of generating offensive or off-the-rails content. If you’re choosing a chatbot for a kid or a workplace, this is a real consideration.
• Privacy runs through X. Your Grok usage is tied to the X/xAI ecosystem. Read the data settings if that matters to you.
• Pricing and limits shift constantly. The numbers above were accurate when we checked; they may not be next month.

Should you use it?

Use Grok if you live on X, care about real-time information, or want to play with AI video for free.
